We can not continue to allow the entrenched fossil fuel industry to literally drive us over a cliff that means more pollution, more carbon emissions and missed economic development opportunities. Our family of five fully supports the multi-state Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI)!
Pollution from old cars and trucks is our largest source of pollution, and as a rural state we have our fair share of transportation problems. Mainers deserve solutions that get us safely to work, to stores and appointments, and to our favorite outdoor places—solutions that are affordable, reliable, and reduce air pollution. The technology and know-how exists to get us there; the only thing stopping us is deaf politicians that continue to protect industry over citizens.
TCI will bring significant economic, environmental, and health benefits to Maine, providing hundreds of millions of dollars for local communities in economic growth and health benefits. The TCI keeps investment in our state and revitalizes our transportation sector which in turn will improve business and the tourism economy. TCI is just what we need right now. When federal leadership is non-existent we must lead locally and regionally. Please support, fund and encourage TCI. |

These have been just a few of my favorite things about exchanging city life for Maine life. But my one lingering frustration is the amount of driving I have to do, and the very limited access to public transportation. Why can't Maine have a commuter rail system into its city centers? Why can't Maine do more to build up a public transportation infrastructure, such as shuttles and buses, even in rural areas? If you build it, I suspect they'll come. |

I am in favor of anything we can do, especially in terms of transportation, to mitigate the effects of climate change. This is for the sake of our children and grandchildren. Maine can’t miss this opportunity to invest in solutions to help Maine people safely get to where they need to go that are both affordable and good for the environment.
Mainers deserve new options that result in cleaner air and healthier choices. Pouring pollution into the air and sending our hard-earned money out of state to line the pockets of the fossil fuel industry is not the best path forward for our economy.
Maine needs an ambitious plan to reduce climate-changing transportation pollution. Working together with neighboring states to give Maine hundreds of millions of dollars it can invest here at home just makes sense.
Maine will realize economic, health, and environmental benefits by transitioning to cleaner and more efficient transportation options through adoption of TCI.

TCI can be a critical step on the path to more expansive carbon pricing mechanisms, so TCI has my full support, as well as the support of our communities, to be implemented. We need to think about the long-term arc of our society - in terms of public health, transportation, and environment - and carbon pricing is the most effective way of shaping a stronger future for our children. Let us not forget that TCI idealizes sustainable development, by improving the environment with the benefit of economic growth. Those that oppose TCI fail to understand how it gives us the chance of not only rectifying persevering injustices, but also positively and meaningfully reaping substantial benefits for all our communities. I'd like to call upon the governors of ALL the states to commit to TCI, in the best interests for their constituents. But more importantly, I'd like to wholeheartedly urge the leaders of TCI to clearly communicate the impressive possibilities of such a program, in a way that creates the broad support needed to successfully advance climate change policy. |

We are advocates of switching to alternative and renewable energies worldwide. We would support TCI’s plans for increasing and encouraging introduction of electric vehicles, public transportation networks (again with an electric fleet), enticements for individuals to switch away from gas fueled cars to hybrids and electric. Maine could be an environmentally progressive leader in many ways. We could show other US states positive results from significant reduction of emissions. Right now federal legislation is hopeless while we have such an ignorant and destructive person in charge, so relying state by state seems a viable way to enact protective laws. |

Case in point: Antarctica recently reached 70F. The Thwaites Glacier, melting away from below by contact with warm seawater, is on track to release a huge flow of land-based ice that alone will cause 2 ft in sea level rise. Where I live in Maine, the large Penobscot Bay used to freeze over in winter but that hasn't been seen now in decades. Australia and California are burning due to climate change-induced draughts. Species are threatened with extinction. I could go on.
Support clean transportation in Maine! |
