Doing so ends corporate welfare which seems preferable to using the word "tax". A carbon tax would be good but may not be passed under the current administration. Ending a subsidy (corporate welfare) might be more palatable. A carbon tax on imported fossil fuel may be appropriate.
From a local point of view, we should ease the transition to electric cars. There should be encouragement or subsidies for workplace charging stations, and lots of them. All new homes and apartment complexes should incorporate 220V outlets conveniently located in parking areas. See the Atlanta, GA, ordinance.
We should encourage development of Thorium based nuclear reactors. These are inherently safe and can consume nuclear waste.
We should encourage Electric Vehicles that can feed energy back to the grid (V2G). This could reduce or eliminate need for utility sized batteries. A lot of cars supplying a small amount of energy each could be very effective. An initial subsidy would kick start this technology. It must be accompanied by net metering.

Further, the existing charging stations are often in disrepair. Without working charging stations, people will never get out of their gas guzzlers.
Next, affordable mass transit should be broadened, and where it exists, the service could be better. Give people an option to get out of their cars.
CT does need to charge tolls on major highways just like most other states in the Northeast--mid-Atlantic region.

It is time to deal with the effects of that warming and that is why I fully support the Transportation and Climate Initiative. The city of Boston, in my state, is already facing rising sea levels that will flood the city. The animal kingdom is under severe stress. It's time to act and theTCI is movement in that direction. The fossil fuel industry moguls, only concerned with their company's immediate quarterly earnings and the effect of lower earnings on their personal wealth, opposes any remedial action. We must not be paralyzed into inaction by their greed. |

I am fortunate enough to live within walking distance of a suburban commuter rail line (PATCO) that provides easy access to Philadelphia. Over the years it has provided transportation for both work and leisure activities, allowing me to stay connected and therefore supporting a more healthful lifestyle. Any actions to expand the line and others will be greatly appreciated. |

Carbon emissions do not stop at the border of any particular state, so it is imperative for the states (and DC) to work together, supporting each other's needs, which my vary somewhat. It is time to: 1) encourage people to use public transit by making it affordable, convenient, and pleasant to use. This is a worthwhile financial investment. 2) tax sources of carbon emissions--cars, trucks, gasoline, and major industrial supplies of the products. 3) Invest heavily in alternative forms of energy, especially wind and solar. Fossil fuels are no longer a good investment. Solar and wind are the energy solutions of the future--that's when the smart money should go.

Individual transportation is a climate & time-wasting disaster. Public transportation should be incentivized while individual transportation should be disincentivized. Housing development should have incentives that support improved access to public transportation. Denser housing focused around public transportation nodes will reduce the problems caused by the last mile of travel. |

I urge my state politicians, regardless of their affiliation, to support this initiative wholeheartedly. I realize on such initiatives that some politicians may resist such initiatives primarily on the basis of cost, and I urge them not to. When there is important needed action, cost should not be an issue. State legislatures find ways every year to found any number of actions. Politicians who do not want to support an initiative like this one aren't really saying that the state can't afford to fund an initiative like this one, they are saying that they would prefer not to fund an initiative like this one, that they would rather spend the money on something else. That should not be an option. "Climate change" is really "climate crisis." Humans have been seriously harming our Earth for some time now, and our Earth, in turn, is now starting to hurt humans. This situation will only get worse unless we work aggressively against it. The consequences will be dire. I urge all state politicians to support this initiative. |

In order to cut emissions, and to slow the impact of global warming, we need to reimagine the way that we transport people and goods.
The states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and the city of Washington, D.C., are working on a groundbreaking policy to modernize the transportation sector under the Transportation and Climate Initiative.
We need a plan that holds large transportation polluters accountable for the pollution they create and invests in clean transportation solutions including:
• More public transit and electric vehicle infrastructure in rural areas
• Expansion of commuter rail, electric vehicles, and streets in the suburbs that are safe, walkable, and bikeable

I fully support this and I urge TCI to aggressively promote and adopt innovative initiatives. I live in a suburb of Boston, where traffic is terrible and public transit is, too! For the most part, unless we work in downtown Boston or Worcester, we are forced to drive. We need alternatives that allow growth and economic vitality with minimal additional pollution. |
