We need a plan that holds large transportation companies accountable for the pollution they create and invest in clean transportation solutions such as an expanded and efficient public transit and EV infrastructure in rural and suburban areas, expansion of commuter rail, EVs, bike lanes, and sidewalks to make it safe for commuters, pedestrians, and bikers, and electric bus fleets infrastructure. |

I would LOVE for train travel to be more convenient and more frequent, as it is in Europe. For day trips into NYC, short vacations in New England, PA, DE, MD and visits to DC, train travel is (or should be) much safer and better for the environment than traveling by car. Yet it just isn't simple. Even now, living just outside NYC, we find it easier to drive into Manhattan for restaurants, museums and entertainment, than taking the train. More expensive, but not to be stuck in one of the Penn Stations for an hour, because the trains are so infrequent (if they are even running at all...hello Uber!). This just shouldn't be our reality in the "greatest country." |

Now is the time for the region to take bold action to mitigate climate change and roll back emissions. The Transportation and Climate Initiative has potential to become the sixth largest economy in the world. This is not an opportunity we can pass up. While it's not legislation yet, it will have a huge impact on Connecticut's efforts to combat climate change and move our state into a modern, green economy. |

We need streets and sidewalks in the suburbs that are safe, walkable, and bikeable. And lastly, sustainable and equitable housing near transit and electric bus fleets in urban communities but more importantly, urban planning that allows one to live within five to ten miles of their employment which will reduce the need for long commutes and make public transportation more sensible. We need to stop building more HOV highway lanes but build rail and commuter and high speed trains. |

Furthermore, not just equipment, but employee energy use must be factored into all options. Too often I feel energy use at the "retail" level gets all the focus, and I am hoping this initiative takes the matter wholistically. |

The states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and the city of Washington, D.C., are working on a groundbreaking policy to modernize the transportation sector under the Transportation and Climate Initiative.
In order for this regional plan to work, governors of these states and the mayor of Washington, D.C., must ensure that this transportation plan is bold enough to cut harmful transportation pollution at the scale needed to avert the climate crisis. We need a plan that holds large transportation polluters accountable for the pollution they create and invests in clean transportation solutions including:
More public transit and electric vehicle infrastructure in rural areas
Expansion of commuter rail, electric vehicles, and streets in the suburbs that are safe, walkable, and bikeable
Sustainable and equitable housing near transit and electric bus fleets in urban communities |

Therefore efforts need to include multimodal transportation and in particular passenger rail within Connecticut and between New England and Quebec with connections to states west.
Consider the issues of pollution generated as a result of driving out of state. The pollution is not only from automobile/truck exhausts but also from the debris caused by auto/truck braking.

Please proceed with great haste to put a solid plan out there and to apply necessary resources to complete it. CT needs to put tolls on their highways like most of the other states in the project. Fossil fuel emissions need to be taxed higher. Public transportation needs more investment... This isn't tomorrows problem.

I think we should build more electric car charging stations, switch public transit (buses etc.) to electric, and limit the sales of gas guzzling cars in the state ASAP. Such a program in conjunction with other states (NY, NJ, etc) will promote cleaner air and water in the region.
Thank you for your consideration of this comment.

It was a satisfactory experience, saved me money, and was better for the environment. My two local rural counties, Schuyler and Yates, both have public bus systems to transport people who might not own cars or for whatever reason must rely on public transport. I am all in favor of such systems and believe public transportation should receive taxpayer support. |
