I believe it is important to reduce pollution from transportation because it greatly impacts the health outcomes of residents who live near transportation corridors like highways. Malden is entirely an Environmental Justice community and we are also surrounded by highways which produce greenhouse gases and particulates which make our air quality poor. These negative health outcomes disproportionally impacts communities of color, the working class, and the poor.
I would like to thank Governor Baker and his administration for the leadership and drive to join the program. Massachusetts always has and must continue to be a leader for environmental advocacy. I urge the Governor and his dedicated team to select the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction target because bold and decisive action now will pay off dividends in the future.
The Commonwealth should prioritize investments in Environmental Justice communities like Malden and areas that are not currently served by public transit. Bus trap is transit is also a great and cost effective way to bring public transit to underserved areas. A local example of a low hanging fruit would be to extend the bus rapid transit program on Broadway in Everett up the rest of Broadway to Malden, Melrose, and Saugus. This project would completely transform commuting on the North Shore by providing a direct connection to North Station. The opportunity to utilize Encore casino mitigation funds should make this a top priority for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Sincerely,
Ryan O’Malley
City Councillor

Please now choose the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction target that the most recent climate science tells us we need.
And please, please institute policy that prioritizes clean investments in areas overburdened by pollution and/or for those who don’t have access to transportation choices.
Thank you for real leadership on reducing pollution! |

I ask that leadership choose the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction target that the most recent climate science tells us we need. We have scientific data and long standing evidence of the damage that will be caused by allowing such an action to occur. One of the key roles of government is to preserve public safety. Willfully ignoring clear evidence of an impending catastrophe is a dereliction of duty. Scientists have worked for decades to assemble an incontrovertible body of evidence related to our changing climate, and ignoring that information is insidious. Future generations' resources, health and prosperity is dependent on us acting immediately, significantly and broadly.
I urge you that your newly adopted policy prioritizes clean investments in areas overburdened by pollution and/or for those who don’t have access to transportation choices. Thank you. |

I also hate to drive and therefore support any endeavor that would strengthen regional public transit. There have been so many times when we wish we could take the greener (and easier option) of taking the train into Boston from the suburbs or from MA to Maine, but the schedules/access are too limited and/or too slow. |

That being said unfortunately I am an artist living in Berkshire County on a limited income, driving a 13 year old vehicle which get about 15 MPG and cannot afford to buy a more fuel efficient model. If I could I would buy an electric plug-in vehicle but I cannot.
We are all in this together! We need a healthy climate! We need renewable energy! How can we make this work and not unduly burden those least able to afford it???!!! |

I strongly urge that the policy prioritizes clean investments in areas overburdened by pollution and/or for those who don’t have access to transportation choices.

However,I have other suggestions. You can tax rich people who make stupid decisions. How would this work?First of all you have to define your goals. One goal is for the state and cities to never buy a gasoline car or truck or bus again. The next goal should be that in 2026 Mass. will not register a new car that is not electric How to accomplish this?Every day I see other cars on the turnpike which may cost at least as much as mine,if not more.If someone is dumb enough to want to buy an expensive new car that uses gasoline let them pay for the privilege of polluting and contributing unnecessarily to the problem. Let us impose a Pollution Added Tax for every new car sold by July 2020 of $1000 for new gasoline cars selling between 35-45k.If someone wants to buy a cheaper new car for less, for now no tax.Increase the tax for more expensive cars, and increase the tax yearly by $1000. This way no one can complain that we are taxing the lower income folks.Copy California in terms of increased rebates for purchases of ev cars for lower income folks. At the moment one can buy a Nissan Leaf for $15,000 or a Chevy Bolt for $17000. Devise mechanisms for lower income folks to buy used ev cars, and still get a state rebate. This is hardly rocket science. Use the taxes collected first to fund an electric school bus fund. Then an electric garbage truck fund. And a fund for increased rebates for lower income folks. |

I now urge him and the Mass. House and Senate to formally join this effort and push for the strongest policies and regulations
recommended by climate scientists and transportation experts.
Greenhouse gas and particulate pollution from automobiles are major contributors to global warming and respiratory disorders. We must immediately begin to drastically reduce these pollutants and, in the process, make affordable public transportation available to underserved people who must drive to work and other necessary activities. |

We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and raise much needed revenue to modernize our transportation system on a regional scale and we can’t afford to let it slip by! Massachusetts legislators have shown that they’re concerned about the environment through current commitments to curb emissions, the TCI is the next step to ensuring we truly make a difference. Instead of expanding Logan airport, we should be looking for more innovative ways to cap emissions and curb greenhouse gasses. Please strongly consider joining the TCI. Thank you for your consideration in this matter that affects all of our lives and the planet we all call home. |

Baker for steering this project and I fully support MA joining the TCI program.
