Most transportation systems being used is outdated and not eco-friendly. As a country, we must replace our old transportation systems with low carbon emission vehicles, trains, planes, trucks, etc. This must be done now to prevent any more devastating effects to our climate. We must not wait to do this, everyone's lives depend on it. |

There should be no room in a civilized society for air and water to be anything less than pristine, both from a health perspective, and from a quality of life perspective. The fact that transportation pollution disproportionately affects inner-city neighborhoods is just one of many reasons. None of us are untouched by pollution and its effects. The science is clear that man made causes of climate change need to be reversed before they create a permanently non-reversible situation that is untenable. From a personal perspective, my spouse has no options but to drive in heavy stop-and-go traffic two times each day. There are no public means of transportation to travel north and south on Route 128, nor many other routes as well. This directly affects our quality of life, and productive or enjoyable personal time. It also heavily adds to the region's pollution and the effect on the ozone layer.
I appreciate that Governor Baker is in favor of this initiative, and I hope it is the first of many such initiatives to come that will turn back the hands of time to before the productive, but detrimental, industrial age. |

Transportation is a major contributor. At the same time, traffic congestion has become unbearable in the Boston area. So all measures we can use to decrease greenhouse gas emissions while providing better mass transit must be brought to bear as rapidly as can be managed. The Transportation and Climate Initiative is therefore a good idea, and should be implemented with the greatest urgency. |

I'm in Massachusetts. I'm so happy and excited to hear about this initiative. I've learned in the last year that transportation is one of the leading contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. So doing something in this sector seems to me to be "low hanging fruit" so to speak. So thank you so much for taking on this issue.
Thank you Governor Baker for your leadership and I sincerely request that Massachusetts formally join the program. Please choose the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets that are in line with the latest Climate Change science. And please prioritize areas where pollution is highest and impacting people the most for investments in clean energy.
Yours respectfully and sincerely,
Ms. Arlen Gould |

We need to take climate action now and work to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and a high-functioning, high-efficiency regional transportation network has the capacity to reduce air travel, a major source of emissions. More local transportation infrastructure has the dual benefits of reducing the number of cars on the road and the required frequency of road repair, both of which will help reduce emissions. We should adopt the most aggressive greenhouse gas emission reduction targets available, because we are already too late to avoid many of climate change's impacts, but action now will help keep us from causing irreparable harm.
I hope also that you prioritize clean investments in areas overburdened by pollution and/or for those who don’t have access to transportation choices. We should try to develop sustainably and equitably whenever possible, and work to right the wrongs of discrimination and poverty. |

There are many towns that we can't get to in a timely manner on Cape Cod because the CCRT's one bus at a time makes travel without a car, especially for visitors, too timely. It would take a whole day to ride busses from Falmouth to Provincetown. I'm not complaining about CCRT because I know it is a lifeline for many Cape residents. Trains from Cape Cod to Boston would help with commuters and locals with business or fun in Boston. The traffic to the Steamship Authority ferry terminal in Woods Hole is extremely polluting and intrusive to local residents. More public transit would be most useful there.

Transportation pollution has a negative impact on the well-being of all who live in our local community, not to mention the broader implications for the world in general. I believe firmly that it is necessary, given the current state of our environment and unrelenting trends towards its continued demise, that we need strong leadership to help enforce aggressive pollution reduction policies. Individuals cannot be relied upon, nor expected to, act in the interest of the greater good when left to act entirely on their own. Please prioritize clean investments that consider long-term ramifications. |

(1) Strengthen your goals, if market changes is going to create a 19% drop in emissions then the CTI effort should be more robust than 20, 22, and 24% reduction goals. We can and MUST do better, a minimal increase in fuel price must result to drive behavior change and the current models/suggestions of $0.25 are not going to do it. (2) All fossil fuels for transportation should be taxed, including liquified natural gas, this is a climate initiative after all and switching from petroleum to gas does not improve the climate. (3) Assess ethanol as well. Nothing about ethanol is sustainable as it is derived from corn which is a fossil fuel intensive crop. (4) Invest heavily in electrification and increased access of mass transit - that to be effective must also dissuade people from using cars and increase density of our living situations. Thanks, Sue Hughes-Smith Adjunct Professor of Environmental Health at SUNY Brockport and Environmental Studies at R.I.T. |
