My generation is going to be facing the worst effects of climate change, and we don't have time to wait. TCI is a great way to incentivize a decrease in emissions, and to generate revenue to fund renewable energy projects.
Transportation is the biggest source of emissions in the Northeast, and is also seriously declining. Our public transportation infrastructure is terrible, and TCI is a great way to not only reduce these emissions, but to get funding to fix our failing transportation infrastructure.
I think that passing TCI would be very beneficial long-term, and could help all of us in the Northeast reach our emission reduction goals. I'd rather pay a few more cents for gas to have a cleaner, safer environment for everyone. TCI will also help to fund the shift to electric vehicles, which is going to happen no matter what, and TCI would help to make that transition smoother and better for everyone. |

While I believe we must do what it takes to reduce our carbon footprint and a regional (or national) solution is needed, I read the MOU and don't understand how this raises more money than could be raised from either increasing the existing taxes on fuels or instituting a production- or distributor- level tax on all fuels. It is complex, requires new bureaucracy (overhead), and introduces opportunities for profiteers to work the system. And... it won't start to fund clean energy projects for two years. Conclusion: If this is the only way to increase cost of fossil fuels and incentivize green initiatives, then I'm supportive, but I'd prefer a more direct and immediate solution. |

Rhode Island has been Democratically run for decades and we are flat broke, infrastructure is falling apart, schools are failing, young adults are leaving because there are no jobs, and now we have EZ-Pass on our highways soon to be in our driveways, the way things are going.
This Transportation Climate Initiative is just another unwanted tax that will do nothing more than fill the pockets of dirty politicians.
Exactly what initiative in regard to the climate is this tax supposed to fix? Where is the data that supports this initiative? What is the end result of this fix? What is the time line to fix this problem? Is it before or after we are all suppose to die? |

New car buyers need to be incentivized to buy electric. We need to continue the NY State rebates as well as pass legislation to have the first $30K of the EV purchase be tax free. We need to move more quickly on the infrastructure of fast chargers along all of our highways. This would encourage those who still have range anxiety that q quick charge is available everywhere across the state. Expanding light rail in NYs larger cities will take many cars off the road, reduce commute time and bring economic development along it's corridors. We need to provide more grants for our transit authorities to transition to BEBs as well as our school systems. This is an environmental justice issue as well as a way to improve our air quality. Since the transportation sector generates up to 40% of all GHGs in NY State with over 60% coming from light passenger vehicles improving accessibility and reliability in our public transit systems is of utmost importance in the equation. Buffalo residents without cars have long waiting periods between buses, sometimes dangerous stops due to snow pile up and not enough routes for outer city jobs. These are all ways to improve transportation while addressing goals to reduce GHGs. |

Middle-income families make up roughly one-third of Americans. By increasing the gas tax, not only are you lessening the amount of money in their pockets, but the amount of money being pumped into the economy is being lessened too.In fact spending on side projects has increased 38% since 2008 while spending on core highway projects has remained flat. This solution would only support and encourage more wasteful spending. The transportation of goods is primarily done via highways. This will cost drivers more to fuel their way to deliver goods, meaning a higher cost on goods, which reduce the discretionary income of millions of Americans, and often correspond with diminished economic growth. In fact, analysts at Goldman Sachs predict “lower gas prices could add as much as half a percentage point to GDP growth this year.” |

Transportation emissions account for 45% of Vermont’s total greenhouse gas pollution. To meet our carbon-reduction goals, we MUST reduce pollution from our cars and trucks. Expanding public, shared transportation is crucial and will cut down on pollution and offer opportunities to develop clean-energy-fueled transportation. And it will ALSO help address the social isolation of Vermonters (and residents of all TCI states) who do not own or drive their own vehicles -- giving them affordable public options to get to jobs, appointments, errands, and even other towns and states. Now is the time to create the future of transportation, not cling to the insufficient status quo. |

I hope that is NOT where the initiative is headed. I would much rather see money put towards light rail or the Vermonter and Ethan Allen trains and even buses go around the state frequently. I have friends all over the state and I must carpool or drive alone from Norwich.
To stop for even an hour somewhere I don't want to be for at least an hour is not going to get me to drive my Leaf to Montpelier. Technology and the car batteries need to get much better before this is a feasible idea.
If we want people to stop driving their fossil fuel cars, frequent mass transportation is the best thing. |

It will do absolutely nothing towards mitigating the stated claims of the TCI. Its sole purpose is to take more money from the citizens which then go into the general fund. Why is it that progressives feel the need to make everything we need to do for our families more expensive? I currently have two kids in college. And my wife and I are trying to do all we can so they don't have a large bill when they graduate, and now the TCI will come in and make that more difficult. My oldest commutes from home to school and work, TCI will be a burden on us all. We need to fight this and let them know that this must not be put in place! |

Yes let's move to reduce carbon emissions, but capping them with the TCI plan of authoritarian price increases in a product that many are dependent on in an attempt to motivate behavioral changes to reduce their usage of fuels is problematic and an inefficient manner to create behavioral changes.
I see the likely result of this is to cause pain for many who are trying to earn a living (transportation to work), get food to their table (transportation for food from warmer climates to the northeast, and transportation to get the food to the table), and heat their homes in the northeast (not all can heat totally with wood), while paying more in taxes that will be used to benefit only some. I don't see this as changing behaviors.
I do not support a tax and spend program given the already high taxes in Vermont. Even if this is instituted I still expect to heat my existing home with some non-wood sources, shop at stores to buy food, and drive a fuel efficient car to earn a living and to pay my share of taxes. Also, regarding electric vehicles, before you plan to tax, spend, and cap our use of fuel efficient cars, I suggest you consider what would happen to our economy and personal safety if with the current technology we have many stranded vehicles clogging our roadways in the winter as their batteries loose half their output when it gets cold.
I can reduce my personal emissions but cannot cap them and do not support a government "service" to disadvantage and cap the basic necessities of life! |
