On top of that, the conscious choice to make more effective use of electric vehicles and more energy efficient transportation networks will help us turn the corner on carbon reduction and growing pessimism. |

Climate change is getting worse and we must all put our shoulders to the wheel to save Planet Earth.
For those concerned about the impact of increasing prices, especially those who are poor, I would ask them to consider who is hurt the worst from climate change? Answer: the poor, who more often than not are located in areas subject to flooding where the rich do not want to live. This is especially true in other countries, about which we should care, countries like Bangladesh. We Americans should lead the way to stop global warming to help those who are most impacted by sea level rise and flooding, but who have done the least to contribute to the problem. |

1. Do not exclude non-fossil fuels from the cap. Ethanol and biodiesel have a large CO2 production component from fossil fuels.
2. It is important to let the public know how the revenue will be used to be able to sell the TCI. The revenue should not be used only for changing our transportation modes. More CO2 reduction may be possible by supporting buttoning up lower income resident's houses for example. |

Reducing transportation sector emissions is important to me because of the dire climate situation which is largely driven by transportation C02. The climate crisis is UPON us, here and now, and we are losing time to do everything we can to mitigate the losses to come. It is also important to address social justice, since poor communities bear the brunt of climate problems. We have already lost decades in making the broad and unprecedented changes that are needed. Please do everything you can.
Please choose ***the most aggressive**** greenhouse gas emissions cap.
Any TCI policy should address equity and investment in overburdened and under-served communities as a first and foremost priority.

It is also essential for creating a sustainable environment in which we have clean air to breath. Connecticut has one of the highest rates of asthma in this country. I know what it is like to stay awake nights trying to deal with my son's asthma attacks. I have also seen the growing smog and dirty air that is created by our fossil fuel burning vehicles in the mountains of Vermont. We need good, reliable and abundant public transportation that will reduce our need for individual cars, support people in every economic class, and improve the quality of life in all of our communities including urban, suburban and rural. For instance, my son has benefitted greatly from the bus system between rural Stores and Hartford. Good public transportation is an economic engine and provides access to economic opportunities for all people. Making a transition to electric energy to power that transportation is also essential to reduce carbon emissions and to create a truly green economy. It will help to reduce health care costs as well and improve the quality of life wherever that transportation is found. Owning an electric vehicle I know how much more efficient and safer these vehicles are. We need our government to lead on these issues and to take the steps necessary to combat the climate crisis. |

I hope the use of private jets, planes and helicopters have been factored into the initiative. Over the past several years there has been a noticeable and considerable uptick in private air traffic over my home and neighborhood none of which originated from the town I live. Not only are these vehicles of transport contributing to carbon in our atmosphere they are creating considerable noise pollution. |

Probably (I'm guessing, have no statistics) more fuel is consumed in bussing kids to and from school and other activities than any other transportation system in Maine and this would go a long way toward mitigating our output.
Providing public transportation throughout the state is a really thorny problem since we are such a sprawled population but I am convinced that here on the coast at least affordable housing would help resolve some of that. Every morning and every afternoon in Camden, Rockland, and other midcoast communities where the jobs are, hordes of mostly large SUVs, often with heavy snowplows attached, and usually with just one occupant, flood in from Washington, Appleton, Hope (the hinterland), as workers drive from where they live to where they work. Housing costs in the midcoast have soared so high, often with out-of-state demand for a piece of the coast of Maine, that employees at all levels can no longer afford to live in the town where they work.
Beyond that, of course, is the problem of public transportation which almost seems insoluble in a state as large and with a population as sprawling as Maine's. I will be looking for creative solutions to this--tax relief for shared vehicles? more and safer bicycle lanes? more power outlets for electric vehicles? Everything I come up with seems like a minor stopgap measure but there HAS to be a way to get people where they want to go (and, equally important, when they want to go there) that doesn't involve massive single-person transit by the most energy-wasteful form of population that humankind has invented, the personal automotive vehicle. Perhaps a good way to start would be by funding a huge research effort at the University of Maine. |
