The Northeast Electric Vehicle Network is an effort to coordinate electric vehicle infrastructure planning and deployment throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. The Network refers to more than just physical infrastructure; it includes the partnerships and connections necessary for a successful transition to cleaner and more efficient electric transportation.

As part of a broader regional strategy to facilitate the deployment of a range of alternative fuels and vehicles, an agreement was reached in late 2011 to coordinate efforts under the Transportation and Climate Initiative to develop a Northeast Regional Electric Vehicle Network.

The Network was launched in late 2011 as a project of the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI). Funding for the initiative was provided in part by a nearly $1 million Electric Vehicle readiness grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, which was awarded to NYSERDA on behalf of TCI.

States are continuing to develop the partnerships needed in both the public and private sector to build a robust network of charging stations throughout the region. More than 100 companies, organizations, and jurisdictions pledged to work with the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network to support electric vehicle use.

Through the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network, northeastern states worked to lay the groundwork for the region to lead the way in the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs), capturing the many economic, jobs, and environmental benefits associated with EVs. Participating states also engaged in important planning work to remove barriers to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and ensure that public charging stations are placed in strategic locations that both maximize usage and facilitate interstate travel.

Through the Northeast Electric Vehicle Network, TCI states have worked together to:

  • Develop partnerships with the private sector, utilities, and other public entities.
  • Encourage the streamlining of permits for the installation of home and public charging stations and remove other barriers.
  • Coordinate regional, state, and local planning to ensure that charging stations are placed in locations that maximize both local and regional travel.
  • Ensure a consistent experience for electric vehicle users.
